Details

The DFC Diesel Billet Front Timing Case is a one-piece billet aluminum replacement for the factory front timing case on 2021-2024 Ram 6.7L Cummins trucks built with the CP3 injection pump. It is machined from solid rather than cast, and carries a reinforced power steering pump bracket. This is the CP3 version; trucks with a CP4 pump take part number 671920CP4BTC.

Machined From One Piece of Billet Aluminum

A billet case starts as a solid block of wrought aluminum and has every feature cut into it. Nothing is poured, so there are no cores, no draft angles and none of the porosity, shrinkage voids or inclusions that come with a casting. The grain structure of the material runs unbroken through the finished part, which is what gives billet its strength and dimensional consistency advantage over cast aluminum of the same alloy.

Because the case is cut rather than moulded, the sealing surfaces, bearing bores and bolt bosses are all machined in one setup off common datums. Everything on the part is located relative to everything else, rather than being machined into a casting that already has its own variation built in.

There is also more material where DFC wanted more material. A casting has to be designed around how the metal will flow and how the cores will pull, so wall thicknesses are a compromise. Machining from solid removes that constraint, and the case can carry heavy sections in the high-load areas without dragging weight into places that do not need it.

Reinforced Power Steering Pump Bracket

The front timing case carries the power steering pump, and that mount does real work. It reacts belt tension continuously, and every steering input loads it again through the pump body. On a heavy truck running larger tires, a steering box brace, or hydraulic assist, those loads climb well past what the mount sees in stock form.

DFC reinforces the power steering pump bracket on this case. It is machined as part of the same solid piece as the rest of the housing rather than being a separate bolt-on or a thin cast web, so the load path from the pump into the block runs through continuous material.

CP3 Application

This case is machined for the CP3 injection pump used on 2021-2024 6.7L Cummins trucks. The pump mounting provisions are specific to that pump, so the case has to match what is actually on the engine.

Check the pump before ordering. Model year is a good guide but not a guarantee, particularly on a truck that has already had fuel system work done. If the engine still runs a CP4, order 671920CP4BTC instead.

Installation Notes

Replacing the front timing case is a front-of-engine teardown. The cooling package, fan and shroud, belt, tensioner and harmonic balancer all come off before the case is accessible, and the injection pump and power steering pump both have to be dealt with. Budget accordingly and plan on a shop with the right pulley and fan tooling.

Plan on replacing the front crank seal and the case gasket at the same time, since both are exposed during the job and neither is worth reusing once the case is off. Confirm what is included with the case and what needs to be sourced separately before the truck comes apart.

Torque specifications and sealing requirements for the case follow DFC's instructions. Follow them rather than the factory service procedure where the two differ.
